Zur Umwandlung von Tryptophan in die Serotonin-Vorstufe 5-Hydroxytryptophan ist das Enzym Tryptophanhydroxylase nötig. Wird dieses Enzym durch den Hemmstoff Parachlorophenylalanin (PCPA) blockiert, kann Serotonin nicht mehr gebildet werden.
