The "benzodiazepine signature": details

Zolpidem, an agonist at the benzodiazepine receptor, induces the typical spectral "benzodiazepine signature".

  • Reduction of delta activity
  • Reduction of theta/alpha activity
  • Increase of spindle frequency activity

  • Note that the depression of theta/alpha precedes the depression of delta. This is seen also for the benzodiazepine hypnotics (Borbély et al., 1985).
