The Duomo di Orvieto

Begun in 1290, the cathedral of Orvieto needed more than two centuries to reach its greatest splendor. Byzantine and northern elements were combined into the so-called Italian Gothic style, of which the cathedral of Orvieto is a prime example.

The relief panels surrounding the main doors are among the most important examples of early 14th-century Italian sculpture. The stories they tell were understood by everyone at a time when only the privileged few knew how to read.
