REM sleep is not equal to "dream sleep"

Sleep researchers occasionally refer to REM sleep loosely as "dream sleep", since dreams are reported in 80 percent of the cases when subjects are awakened from this stage.

Experiments have shown, however, that considering only REM sleep as dream sleep is an oversimplification, since the waking up of subjects from non-REM sleep also produces dream reports in up to 74 percent of the cases.
