Elephants sleep in lateral recumbency

In the zoo, the circus and in the wild, elephants spend many hours sleeping in lateral recumbency.

The time they spend lying on the right and the left side is approximately equal.

When they are well habituated to their surroundings, all animals in a group (here there were 7 in the large circus tent) may sleep simultaneously.
