Behavioral sleep in sheep herds

corporate vigilance

It is almost impossible to find all animals in a heard of sheep sleeping at the same time.

One could assume that some must always watch over the others to ensure the safety of the herd.

"Corporate vigilance" has been investigated in birds (Amlaner  & Mc Farland (1981) Lendrem (1983 ; 1984) but not in mammals.
